In she walks wearing one of New York based Dominican fashion designer Peter Hidalgo‘s latest creations for Spring/Summer 2012, a turqouise Mosquito dress that asserts her readiness to conquer the world and create all opportunities. She has a lot to celebrate, a dream come true to most artists and even bigger accomplishment for someone from the small pond of Dominican Republic to the mecca of Art and Design.

Marielle DeLuna is an emerging photographer who said yes to living her passion later in her life. From being an American Airlines employee to owning Marielle DeLuna Photography, she has broken molds with her unique personality and love for the obscure in a land where this practice is most unconventional.

She is not a stranger to adversity having received “shade” from purists for her radical views and tell-it-like-it-is personality. Sticks and stones that will never affect an outstanding mother raising a beautiful family, an anchor that reminds her of what is really important at the end of the day. Judging by their participation in one of the photographs being displayed at the Broadway Gallery in SoHo they support her passion wholeheartedly.

Marielle took some time to answer some questions for The Happiest Medium.

When did you fall in love with the lens? what inspires you?
Marielle: Since I was a child I love Art… My inspirations come from old and romantic paintings; the paintings are a dream to me, a secret or a mysterious kind of beauty.
Beauty can be created and represented by a dream, or fantasy, sometimes romantic and sometimes repugnant.

How did you get involved with Broadway Gallery and this exhibit?
MDL: Thanks to my dear friends Chloe Fernandez and Peter Hidalgo, both in fashion actually.

Marielle DeLuna

How has being a native of the Dominican Republic influence your Art? how does it add to it and how does it make it challenging?
MDL: In Dominican Republic traditional photographers and art buyers are mostly interested in folkloric Art and Destination Photography, which is why I think I’ve been mostly influenced by International artists, but there is a part of our history that really inspires me and makes me dream of the past and the people of yesteryear forcing me to look for other ways of expression…. Our Colonial Zone is full of history and very rich in untold stories that I try to catch with my eye and translate with my lens.

What is next for Marielle DeLuna?
MDL: A Fantasy Book.

Marielle DeLuna’s photos were on display through February 2nd at the Broadway Gallery in SoHo NYC.

In an era of virtual reality the prospect of visiting an exhibition dedicated to products of designer craft presents a salutary experience. Here, at least, one can be assured of an encounter with the visual imagination made tangible; ideas translated into something that can be touched, held, worn, or reclined upon. The exhibition DUBH – Dialogues in Black, is an eye and mind-opening example of what contemporary designers are thinking about and actualizing at the cutting edge of our engagement with material culture.

Stemming from an initiative developed by Irish craftsman Joseph Walsh’s organization, STUDIO practice, and curated by Irish artist Brian Kennedy, the premise of the show is to place contemporary Irish craft and design practitioners in concert with their U.S. and international peers, demonstrating the vitality of Irish designers and drawing attention to the greater innovative achievements current in contemporary craft and design practice. You can put away your fusty expectations of finding the traditional crafts associated with Ireland – Aran sweaters, bawneen knits, country pottery, Donegal tweeds – and prepare to embark on a distinctly twenty-first century experience. Most of the craftspeople here seem to be considering contemporary notions of biology, genetics, even particle physics, disposing of historical attitudes toward craft practice, or confronting good old fashioned cultural myopia. “Dialogues in Black” may be the organizing principle behind this collection (dubh – pronounced duv – is the Irish for black) but the range of forms, feelings, and ideas at play here presents quite a varied sampling of treasures. Kennedy appears to have reached wide and far, and he is to be commended for both the breadth of the show and for permitting the “dialogue” that occurs to flow so sleekly about the gracious and somewhat period styled interiors of the AIHS’s rooms. An artful balance is struck, never permitting any exhibitor’s contribution a domineering presence or freer rein than the others. He knows how to show this stuff.

The “stuff” extends from Inga Hamilton’s floor lying fabric installation – an inky puddle of joined textiles with scattered ceramic bone pieces and marabou feather trim, lurking beneath a grand piano like a fugitive shadow – through Liam Flynn’s exquisite and commanding ebonized turned wood vessels, to Catherine Owens’s slow-blooming graphite and light drawings silently holding a wall in one corner. Undeniable they may be, but Jonathan Wahl’s poster sized, photo-realistic charcoal drawings, detailing pieces of Victorian jet mourning jewelry on stark white backgrounds, retain rigor and self-discipline for all their scale, and seem to turn their volume down enticingly as they lure you closer to inspect them. You can’t miss Joseph Walsh’s Enignum II chair either, poised on three legs, somewhat resembling a curlew, as Walsh works characteristically to bend wood almost as if it were wax. Restrainedly zoomorphic, it is echoed by Frances Lambe’s ravishing ceramic pieces – Sea Bean and Spiny Form – which resemble fantasies by Ernst Haeckel , and by Sonya Clark’s cunning and thoughtful tick piece, rendered in a construction of plastic combs. The vegetable realm gets a graphic homage in a paper construction by Lauren Fensterstock, in jewelry by Eily O’Connor, and even in the zipper jewelry of Kate Cusack whose mature visualization using this singularly mundane product is as excitingly innovative as it is impressive. Nuala O’Donovan’s complex, architectural porcelain grid cube is concerned with fractals and organic patterning, and there’s more than a whiff of micro-organisms about the jewelry works of Sondra Sherman and Douglas Bucci. Bucci’s arresting work in particular derives from microbe and cell forms, digitally rendered and tweaked in graphic form and then given substance using a three dimensional “printing” process. This is frontline digital industrial technology, and Bucci is not the only designer deploying it here. Catherine Owens’s drawings are housed in frames made with a similar replicating process, and combined with her painstaking, laborious graphic handiwork, they couple traditional hand craftsmanship with contemporary authorial digital design. Bucci’s work is all but exclusively designed in virtual space, and then produced using a resinous compound from a three-dimensional printer reading. If we are getting to the point where the craftsman’s hands may never touch a work until it is actually “finished”, can we still call it craft? For brevity’s sake let’s dodge that one and just refer to these craftspeople – gifted designers, visionary creators – as artists. In our times that’s a somewhat hackneyed, more than a little bloated term, and without wishing to be too controversial I might even suggest that they would breathe a little more authenticity into it. In total there are thirty such exhibitors in this highly recommended show, and I for one would not begrudge any of them the title.

The show runs through November 13th and will travel to Dublin next year. Anyone interested in design will find something to admire here, and everyone wondering where – culturally, aesthetically – we are right now, will find much to ponder on and not a little to delight in.

So I snapped a shot and did some snooping around, and found out about a fantastic non-profit called Sing for Hope, and their Play Me I’m Yours arts project.

Play Me, I’m Yours, has a total of 60 pianos at different parks and public spaces all around New York City. From June 21 to July 5, the pianos are placed throughout the city’s five boroughs to be played by all who pass by — students, tourists, children, nannies, doctors, merchants, artists — in a festival of music open to all New Yorkers.

I’m definitely heading on down there to see if I catch someone actually playing the damn thang.

One to one, one at a time, all of the time, thousands of keys will be bestowed by thousands of people on thousands of citizens for thousands of reasons that deserve to be recognized. Keys to cities are traditionally given by a mayor to a hero or dignitary, symbolizing that they can have free entrance to the city.

This new Key to the City belongs to us, and is awarded among ourselves. We will give each other the key to our city for private reasons that exist outside of history. Instead of being acknowledged for landing a plane in a river, we are awarded the key for perfect attendance in school. Instead of receiving an honor for winning the World Series, we receive the key because of the kindness we showed at the hospital. And with this new key, we gain an opportunity to step back and reflect on common space in the city. For not only does the key open up specific sites, but it can also make us aware that the city is a series of spaces that are locked or unlocked.

How to Participate

Key to the City is a public art project that is free and open to everyone. To participate and get a key, simply visit the Key to the City kiosk in Times Square, on Broadway, between 43rd and 44th Streets. We encourage you to bring someone with you as you will not only receive a key, but also bestow a key through a special ceremony. If you come alone, you can still participate—or, you might even meet someone in line who you want to award the key. As you wait in line, you will receive a guidebook with information about each site the key opens and Creative Time volunteers will explain how the key bestowal ceremony works. Part of preparing for the key bestowal ceremony involves filling out a template script, which you will read aloud during your ceremony.

When you reach the front of the line, you (and your partner) will enter a temporary park that the artist refers to as “the commons.” Upon entering the commons, you will fill out a page of the communal ledger, preserving the key ceremony for posterity. You will then read aloud the script that you filled out in line, specifying the reason you are bestowing the key upon your partner, and award them the Key to the City. They will then award you a key in return, and you will both be official holders of the Key to the City.

Upon exiting the commons, you will be equipped with your guidebook containing directions to, and pictures of, all 24 Key to the City sites located across the five boroughs. Your key will open a lock at each site. As many of the sites are quite far, you will need to plan your visits in advance. To get your Key to the City adventure started, you can walk over to Bryant Park and use your key to turn a public street lamp on and off.

This project exists not only in public space, but virtual space as well. We encourage you to post your pictures to Flickr, add your comments to the “Open a Lock” section of this website, and use social networking platforms like Twitter and Facebook to share your experiences. Ultimately, Key to the City is about democracy, access, and your city—enjoy it!

By all accounts the Come Out and Play festival was a huge success. And we’re pleased to say that The Paper Plane Derby (featured earlier on THM) was winner of the Best Family Game! CONGRATULATIONS!

Our very own Stephen Tortora-Lee was an eager participant in the derby and wound up bringing home “Most Innovative Design”; his lovely award now hangs proudly in our home for all to see. (You can see a picture of him lined up and ready to compete after the jump.)

We caught up with Rachel Schutt and Linda Perkins again to see how they felt the day went and asked them to tell us about some of their favorite moments.

Linda Perkins: The most exciting thing for me was to see that our idea for a competition with a level playing field really worked. Kids competed against adults, boys against girls, beauty vs. function and a mix of all of these advanced in each round. The overall champions and award winners show the success of our theory. And to see that the adults were just as excited as the kids to win a trophy or a medal was very gratifying.

#1 Carlos with "Travieso", #2 Roman with "The Blue Screen of Death", #3 Vadim with "Challenger", #4 Isobel with "ISSY", #5 Peter with "Flying Piglet"

I was excited when, right after the derby, Carlos (competitor #1) asked if we would be back next year because he had so much more fun than he expected and he definitely wanted to play our game again.

Rachel Schutt: People were *really* into it. Looking around the room and seeing people, little girls and grown men, furiously working on their planes, test flying them, and checking out the competition made me happy. One thing I was excited about ahead of time were the contests for “most innovative design” and “most beautiful plane”. I hoped that people would embrace these contests, as much as the classic contest for the longest distance. We provided lots of art supplies: stickers, feathers, glitter pens, scissors, construction paper, paper clips, markers. I was happy to see people diving in and using them. I like the idea that we, as game designers, designed an experience that allowed our participants to themselves be designers. For me, this was a personally fulfilling experience and I hope Linda and I can come up with future collaborations that are at the intersection of games and art.

Thanks, ladies!

On behalf of everyone here at The Happiest Medium, we’d like to congratulate ALL the fabulous participants because as far as we’re concerned – you’re all winners! For more great photos of the competitors be sure to check out The Red Baron. And don’t forget to Come Out And Play again next year!

Tell me the truth . . . Paper Airplanes – Origami for Americans or just a clever way to send the math test answers across the room?

America’s favorite paper company, Dunder Mifflin, used the Paper Airplane in the director’s cut of their paper commercial, and everyone’s favorite engineer – Dilbert – has one in the opening credits of his animated series.

This weekend you can compete in the First Annual Paper Airplane Derby as part of the Come Out & Play Festival. It’s a great chance to be creative, show off your skillz and win a trophy!

I chatted with Rachel Schutt and Linda Perkins about what makes their Derby the fliest event at the festival.

The 2010 First Annual Paper Airplane Derby is going to be part of this year’s Come Out & Play Festival in Brooklyn, NY. It sounds like a great day! How did you get involved in the festival?

Rachel: I had participated as a competitor in the festival a couple years ago. I love games, in particular, scavenger hunts. When we saw that there was a call for submissions to the festival, we brainstormed a bunch of ideas. In our brainstorming, we gravitated towards games with a certain structure: participants are given a bunch of materials and in a limited amount of time must construct/engineer/design a product which they must then immediately enter into a competition. We played around with a bunch of “products” and decided that the simplicity of the paper airplane and the fact that *anyone* could do it made the paper airplane a good candidate. We put together a proposal and were excited to be accepted into this year’s Come Out & Play Festival. We’re in amazing company.

Paper Airplanes are this iconic thing – everyone made one with the first hand-out they ever got in first grade . . . it was inevitable. What’s your theory as to why people love to turn paper into paper airplanes?

Rachel: Perhaps one aspect is it’s amazing that a 2 dimensional object can be turned into a 3-dimensional object and that the object can fly! When a kid first sees someone fold a paper airplane, it must blow their mind! And then I think people tend to feel happy doing activities they did as a kid. Though they may not always have the opportunity to do those things, or may feel a bit silly or self-conscious, it taps into their innate enthusiasm.

What’s your own funniest, strangest or most ingenious personal paper airplane story?

Rachel: I think Linda has a better story than I do because her story helped inspired this Derby. The story sticking out in my mind is a story my mom just told me the other day. One of my best childhood friends came over to play when we were 3 years old and he was very shy and quiet and didn’t seem to be doing anything, and then suddenly… he crafted a paper airplane! I don’t remember that. But now he’s an engineer.

Linda: I also work in the film business and once got an entire film crew to participate in a paper airplane contest while we were shooting on a stage at Steiner Studios. What started out as a joke became a competitive weekly event. It was really fun to see everyone perfecting their airplane designs, researching them on-line and practicing flights during the week for the Friday lunchtime competition.

You’re up against some stiff competition – for instance, during your time slot (Sunday June 6 at 12 PM) I may want to go to Prospect Park instead to check out the Festival’s game of Silverball (“a fast-paced and high-scoring game of human pinball, a cross between baseball and soccer, played on the side of a hill”). Or, I may want to play Sidewalk Wars which seems to be a combination of tag and kidnapping. Sell me on why the Paper Airplane Derby is better than ANY of those other things!

Rachel: The games you mention do sound fun! However, our games are BETTER because *anyone* can do it. You don’t have to be a super athlete or particularly coordinated to compete in the paper airplane derby! Also it flexes other skills: your engineering skills, your creative skills, your inner dork skills. We’re hoping that all types of people will show up at the derby. If you never won prizes for athletic events in high school, now’s your chance! We have trophies. Did I mention, we have trophies?

Linda: I would also add that all the games at the Come Out and Play Festival are fun for different reasons. It’s not necessarily that one is better than another but that games appeal to people for different reasons. We liked the idea that a paper airplane derby creates a level playing field — kids vs. adults, boys vs. girls, airplane design vs. airplane beauty. And whether you are a kid or remember the magic of making a paper airplane out of your math test as a kid we hope to create a fun and competitive environment with pageantry reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby. And there are trophies! Who doesn’t want to win a trophy!!

Lastly – We’ll post the winner of The Paper Airplane Derby (as well as some runner ups) next week. Before people head on out to compete – do you have any suggestions for winning? Give us your best tips!

Rachel: We posted some designs on our blog so those are some ideas. Practice makes perfect! But in addition to planes that fly very far, we also will be giving awards for planes that are beautiful so you can make a BEAUTIFUL plane that doesn’t fly very well at all and still win a prize! Also innovative design and most spirited participant. So my suggestion is just be yourself: creative, spirited, innovative, and you’ll have a chance at winning!

Thanks, ladies, for the great tips, and we hope everyone comes out to enjoy the fun and festivities of the festival. Check back next week to see the winners!

Living in New York, flanked by some of the best museums of the world we often tend to forget that our city is home to some of the best small collections as well. Last Sunday I spent some time reacquainting myself with the Frick Collection and I was reminded just how much I enjoy this museum.

My main reason for going was to see The Linley Sisters which will be on exhibit until the end of the month, but even if you can’t get there by then there are hundreds of other marvelous gems that may be calling you.

First of all, The Frick is easy to get to. Just a few block up from the Hunter College station on the #6 line, you can be there in no time from wherever you are.

Secondly, the museum is right on the park midway between the Central Park Zoo and The Boathouse so it’s a lovely part of town . . . you can make a day of it – plan on taking a boat ride before or having a nice dinner afterward.

Thirdly, if big museums aren’t your thing, then the Frick is just right for you. Personally, while I’m a lover of art I do find myself getting a little overloaded on, let’s say, too many Dutch Masters, and thus wandering from room to room, only to then find myself suddenly awash in Holy Relics. Then, after another 20 rooms of those, you’re in Chinese Vases and totally lost. This will not happen to you at the Frick. Not only are styles, periods and countries mixed together but if you find yourself completely uninterested in a particular room you won’t get lost in the maze when trying to get to the next one. Since The Frick was once the home of Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), a steel industrialist, the layout is much more inviting and manageable. And since this was Mr. Frick’s personal collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative art, it’s displayed the way he chose to live with these pieces, arranged in a manner that made sense to his own aesthetic, not one that followed any rules of a particular artistic period.

Frick Garden Court

The first thing you notice upon entering the Frick is the beautiful Garden Court with its marble columns, lapping fountains and serene pools. If you come early enough – or during a time when there’s not too many people – you can just sit here and enjoy the beauty of this place before taking in the works of art.

I highly recommend attending the 15 minute film that explains the history of the Frick Collection which is shown in the large screening room. Narrated by the curators of the collection it explains how Mr. Frick built his fortune, how the house came to be constructed, and how he amassed his collection. You’ll have a much better appreciation for the rooms if you take the time to learn the history behind them.

Samson and Delilah / Oil on canvas Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599–1641)

One of my favorite paintings (which is also on loan and only around till the 30th of this month) is the powerful Samson and Delilah by Van Dyck. Not only was there so much emotion in the faces of the subjects in the painting, but there was an amazing interplay of strength and vulnerability in this sleeping Samson that made me wish I could wrench those devious scissors from the hands of that barber.

Another painting which had me absolutely captivated was St. Francis in the Desert by Giovanni Bellini. (Follow this link for a zoomable image where you can really engage with the painting on line). There’s something about this painting in person that was simply astonishing – I was something my fellow contributor Sarah V. Schweig once describe as “museumed” by this painting and I really can’t even say why. All I know is, I could have stood there for hours if my feet hadn’t started to hurt.

St. Francis in the Desert / oil and tempera on poplar panel by Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430 - 1516)

While the Frick’s entrance fee is a bit pricey for some ($18) they have a “Pay What You Wish” period on Sunday that runs from 11am to 1pm and I saw couples give as little as 2 dollars. Stephen and I ponied up a sawbuck each but certainly “Pay What You Wish” means just that, so if you’re low on cash but in need of some good museum time, head on over to the Frick on any given Sunday and get your museum on.

There’s also that mixed fashion I so love in Spring and the month of April; half the population is braving the still somewhat crisp temperatures and taking off the layers and boots, while the other is still hiding behind the winter parkas that will soon be packed in storage boxes or donated to Goodwill.

These are a couple of suggestions of things that make me go Yes! plus places and events you shouldn’t miss out on during the month of April.

April Wear

The most important element that should grace the wardrobe of both men and women in April is a new pair of shades, and by new I mean old. Retro is the fresh look for Spring 2010, from round glasses (Gaga goes googoo over them), retro Ray-Bans (color me 80s), and always in fashion – not leaving us anytime soon – aviator or pilot glasses.

Jeremy Scott Mickey Mouse Glasses

Ray-Ban

And if you think eye-wear is a thing for the geeks, think again! Stop spending money on contact lenses and embrace the sexy. What used to be nerd-wear is now steaming hot. Just make sure they are fashionably sensitive … and guess what? You don’t need glasses? Make a statement! Get your hands on a pair anyways – they are the accessory of the season.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford

April Eats

Spring is all about the Bowery scene, don’t miss this special eat-treat happening this weekend – Travertine restaurant and owner, Danae Cappelletto will host an Alice in Wonderland themed costume party this Easter Sunday, April 4th with music by Tyger Lily.

Travertine

The party will start with a trippy, electronic, candy-coated brunch at 12pm that will float into an evening of music and fine food! In-house Mixoligist, Courtney Bae has created a speciality cocktail using Vieux Carré absinthe. The ‘White Rabbit’, combines fresh lemon juice, grapefruit juice, ginger infused simple syrup and dry prosecco served in a champagne flute. Alice in Travertineland is a bohemian sipping disco queen, with a palate to envy! She never misses the party, especially a costume party! Don your best Alice in Wonderland inspired getup and head down to celebrate Easter. Travertine is located at 19 Kenmare Street, New York, NY

April Care

Earth Day is April 22 and there are a number of events in the city of New York celebrating, informing and most importantly creating a greener understanding during this day and the whole month of April. You can act right now by joining the “b the E” campaign, and showing your support for a greener planet. The campaign evokes Gandhi’s quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” You can join the E campaign and check out the different happenings that day – even share your green ideas.

Adrian Grenier for "b the E"

April Films

Here comes the Neighborhood! The Tribeca Film Festival begins April 21st and the selections this year will not disappoint. From Arias With A Twist: The Docufantasy (documentary of the hit show at HERE Arts Center) to Zonad (selection from Ireland), not taking advantage of these flicks would just be plain foolish.

They recently announced it will be hosting the gala premiere of Letters to Juliet (featuring Amanda Seyfried) on April 25. The Tribeca Film Festival will also hold a special presentation of My Own Love Song, from director Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose) and featuring original music from Bob Dylan.

Arias With A Twist: A Docufantasy

Be sure to pick up your tickets as soon as they go on sale. If you have a My Tribeca account, you can start planning your schedule now by saving My Own Love Song and Letters to Juliet to your calendar!

April Final Must

Lets head out to Brooklyn shall we, to Galapagos Art Space to be exact. This is where the troupe of Suspended Cirque will be every Sunday in April, and all they ask of you is that you be ready to look up. Sundays belong to the aerial cabaret of Swingin’ at Jack’s. Travel back to the year 1947, when Jack’s was the hottest place in town. Mingle with Jack’s saucy French maître d’, two flirty cigarette girls, a sultry songstress, a strapping stagehand, and the famous Jack himself. Watch the drama unfold in the air and on the floor – with sass, class, a wink and a smile – backed by the best live jazz in town.

The reason why it is ingenious is because they are bringing custom made stuffed humans to the average consumer, with an average budget.
Does it get better? It does! It’s as simple as submitting a couple of photos of yourself, they design it and voila! You’re a doll, or as they would call it a Buddy (lets butch it up for the burly men).
