<p>2012 marks the centennial anniversary of the birth of British mathematician, <a title="Alan Turing" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing" target="_blank">Alan Turing</a>, widely acknowledged today as the father of the computer. Internationally it has been dubbed Alan Turing Year, and Olympic torch bearers stopped before a commemorative statue of him on route to the London stadium in tribute to an, as yet, little recognized giant in the history of technological advancement. Winston Churchill opined that Turing&#8217;s decryption device helped to end WWII years earlier than might otherwise have been achieved. Turing&#8217;s life story, however, is a singularly harsh tragedy. A homosexual, in 1952 he was convicted of gross indecency with another man, and compelled to take female hormones as a therapeutic treatment for his &#8220;criminal&#8221; deviance, a procedure widely referred to as chemical castration. Just two years later he was found dead in his bed due to cyanide poisoning.</p>
<p><span id="more-19394"></span></p>
<p><a title="Alex Paul Young" href="http://www.foryouthinquiry.org/alex.html" target="_blank">Alex Paul Young</a>&#8216;s theatrical piece, <em><strong>Pink Milk</strong></em>, is a highly personal, impressionistic work &#8211; a mash up of contemporary gay themes and biographical details from Turing&#8217;s life. Fueled by a righteous outrage and abandoned to a fantastical world of make believe, it dispenses with any sense of historical, cultural, or scientific accuracy, to present a free-form poetic narrative fused with dance and music. It&#8217;s an odd departure point from which to explore the life of a celebrated logician and mathematician, but that&#8217;s not all that&#8217;s odd about it. Young&#8217;s Turing, as a boy, develops a robotic playmate that runs on apples. In real life, the adult Turing was enraptured by Disney&#8217;s animated film, <a title="Snow White" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_White_and_the_Seven_Dwarfs_(1937_film)" target="_blank">Snow White</a>. Apples &#8211; plastic white ones and natural red ones &#8211; denote the stage boundaries, and actors regularly bite into one together as an indication of shared understanding. As a boy Alan is shown to be distracted by daisies growing on playing fields, and these engage him in life and death discussions. A glass of milk is another personified character, and the Pink Milk of the title is a somewhat strained symbol of tainted motherhood &#8211; both bloodied breast milk and TB-infected cow&#8217;s milk. Despite what grown-ups think or say, logic does not apply in young Alan&#8217;s world. Young&#8217;s unruly script, rendered in a somewhat textureless blank verse, gallops along on a dizzy note of abandoned self-indulgence. Its utter whimsicality can be hard to swallow.</p>
<p>What it does have going for it though is a relentless strangeness, a bold insistence on its own terms. The cheap sense of fatalism and overwrought lyricism are suddenly disrupted by a break out of music and synchronized ensemble dancing. The actors huddle in a group as a clubby electronica pop permeates, and a staccato, mechanical choreography takes hold. Apropos nothing, rigid arm thrusting and stiff-necked twisting are enjoyed, and it&#8217;s clubland 1982 again. At once bizarrely appropriate, and yet inappropriate, these instances have a distinctive flair and contribute a signature with its own peculiar gravitas. The troupe of seven young performers are utterly down when it comes to these movement passages and the sequences are as compelling as they are perplexing.</p>
<p>It really is too bad for the play&#8217;s Chicago-based company, White Elephant, that they found themselves booked in to perform here at the <a title="Gene Frankel Theatre" href="http://www.genefrankeltheatre.com/" target="_blank">Gene Frankel Theatre</a>. Originally devised for a surrounded stage forum, the presentation suffers in Frankel&#8217;s compressed space and traditional stage-facing-audience format. Gamefully Elephant string a line of audience seats along the back and side walls of the performance area, but this doesn&#8217;t fully suffice as an answer. Worse still, the Frankel&#8217;s regulations regarding noise levels means the music is played at an absurdly low pitch during dance segments, as if an elderly relative were trying to sleep next door. Energy levels are impacted accordingly.</p>
<p>A hard working cast let none of this really stand in their way. Everyone gives it 100 percent, with stand-out contributions by Casey Hartley as &#8220;The Authority Figures&#8221;, and Joe McManus who, as Turing, struggles to put some humanity into an abstracted, romanticized central character. Young is very lucky in his cast, and perhaps even more so in the directorial hand of Brandon Powers, who propels all along at a headlong tilt with unpredictable turns. Powers is additionally credited as joint choreographer and, as such, it can safely be said that he&#8217;s helped save <strong><em>Pink Milk</em></strong>&#8216;s bacon. The original, catchy, and entirely on point music is by <a title="Viasger" href="http://visager.bandcamp.com/" target="_blank">Visager</a>. Anyone looking for a mature reflection on the life and contribution of Alan Turing is advised to look elsewhere. But if intriguing performance, gay themes, and fantastical whimsy are your bag, you&#8217;ve come to the right place. Drink your milk.</p>

<p>When <em><strong><a href="http://www.fringenyc.org/basic_page.php?ltr=S#Sheher">Sheherizade</a></strong></em> began, it seemed like this might just be a production where there was interpretive dance to help us feel part of the story. But once the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheherazade" target="_blank">story of the storytelling</a> began I was quickly swept up by the organic flow of this piece, wrapped up in the stories as dance, storytelling, a strange type of puppetry, and the hopes and dreams of the characters in the stories-within-stories blended into a magical world that is a wonderful successor of the original .</p>
<p>Director Priscila Garcia along with Director of Movement Anne Marie Bookwalter did a great job of working together to create a beautiful flow which seamlessly transported the audience from one magical world after the next, and made this show an experience I&#8217;ll never forget.</p>
<p><span id="more-19222"></span></p>
<p><em><strong><a href="http://www.fringenyc.org/basic_page.php?ltr=S#Sheher">Sheherizade</a> </strong></em>starts with the story of a troubled king who has taken up the nasty habit of marrying a new woman every day, only to behead her the day after the wedding. The first scene is simple: nothing but drums and dance and flowing red silk representing the blood the King is shedding, as well as the terrible emotions he is harboring. The King&#8217;s pain and rage as well as the sadness of those having to live with the results of his murders is clearly shown through expressive dance and movement.</p>
<p>We then shift to an even more troubled adviser who has had the charge of minimizing the damage this mad King does by placating him as well as supplying him with new brides. He confesses the King&#8217;s crimes to his wise daughter Sheherizade hoping for some counsel or comfort, because he is truly at his wit&#8217;s end. Wanting to ease her father&#8217;s troubles as well as those of the kingdom, Sheherizade quickly colludes with her sister to hatch a plan to end the King&#8217;s reign of terror.</p>
<p>She does this by offering to be the next bride, but instead of waiting until the morning to await her fate as others had done, she asks for sister to come with her, for it has always been there way to end the night in a story. surely he could give into this one final request.</p>
<p>Before telling you a little about the three tales covered in this lush and delicious 40 minute production I wanted to make a quick note about a wonderful technique in this piece. There is not one Sheherizade, and not one King. The role of Sheherizade was passed from one character to the next after every story like some early tribesman passing a totem one to the next to allow another to speak a story around the fire in days past.</p>
<p>This allowed for a different cadence and enactment of the storytelling as well as allow all to be part of the stories. I fell into the story deeper as one never knew what was going to happen next. The cast worked as a wonderful organic whole from the first moment of the play to the last; many thanks to Alex Akin, Terry Kenard Barnes, Erron Crawford, Rodney Earl Jackson Jr., Michael McGuire, Jordan Phillips, Lucia Roderique, Alex Speith, Jasmine Thomas, Josh Wilder for all being the stars as well as costars of this play.  Great ensemble effort.</p>
<p>The first story was that of <em><strong><a href="http://chineseaesop.blogspot.com/2012/05/ma-liang-and-his-magic-paintbrush.html" target="_blank">Liang and the Magic Paintbrush</a></strong></em>, a well known folk tale from China. Liang is a poor man who wishes more than anything to save up his money to buy a paintbrush. A good fairy takes a magical paintbrush from a scholar who had been hoarding it away for many years, and tells Liang he must do Good with the paintbrush. When Liang finishes the final stroke in a drawing of a butterfly it flies off the page as it comes to life. Liang does many good deed from then on from drawing fish for the hungry, to drawing a well for a village. Eventually the Emperor hears of his exploits and captures Liang and commands for him to to draw him mountains of gold. Liang does this but also draws a sea between the Emperor and his gold and a boat for him to reach it by. When he is commanded to draw some wind he instead draws a hurricane that wrecks the boat and the people are freed from the emperors conceited and self-serving rule. The King who has been listening to this story doesn&#8217;t like the ending, but enjoyed the story and Sheherizade.</p>
<p>The second story is from the Dutch tradition of storytelling, and was called <em><strong><a href="http://www.aaronshep.com/stories/017_legend.html" target="_blank">The Most Precious Thing In The World</a></strong></em>. There once was a very rich Lady (played by Michael McGuire) who was so rich that she was bored with all of her gold and jewels and sent her favorite captain out into the world with a ship full of gold to purchase <strong>The Most Precious Thing In The World</strong>.  While he is gone everyone wonders what sort of thing he will return with.  He brings lovely golden wheat which he says will feed all of her people and The Lady commands he toss it into the sea because she is so mad he missed the point of his assignment. There it grows and chokes off all  shipping into her country and causes the ruin of her fortune.  An interesting concept used in this piece was that everyone in it moved as if they were puppets with dangling arms and shuffling legs and bobbing heads.  That, plus Michael McGuire&#8217;s pronouncing of the h&#8217;s in wheat really made this an entertaining piece.</p>
<p>The third story was about <em><strong><a href="http://www.felmausa.org/felmausa84.htm">Mansa Musa The Lion King Of Mali</a></strong></em>. In the story we hear of how the famous King made his country of Mali so amazingly successful in the 14th century (taken from <a href="http://www.booksrockcafe.com/book.php?ISBN=9780152003753">this 2001 version</a> by Khephra Burns). Kankan Musa was captured by slave traders and taken deep into the desert, a place very foreign to him. He was tutored by Tariq in new ways of seeing the world and eventually learns that in order to be a good King (or human being for that matter) it is more important to be compassionate than to be fierce &#8230; more important to be knowledgeable than to be controlling.  By learning  humility fighting against the destructive tendencies that live in us all, this helped him to become one of the greatest leaders of a nation ever.</p>
<p>This final powerful story heals the King of his rage and pride at last as the overall story ends with him embracing Sheherizade and weeping.</p>
<p>The choices and crafting of the stories by playwright Aidaa Peerzada (along with story design of each of the individual pieces by Rodney Earl Jackson Jr., Priscila Garcia, and Anne Marie Bookwalter) was exquisitely done in a very touching and thoughtful way that is a good example to all.  The music design pulled us through the story with excitement and magic, and the lighting by Calvin Johnson highlighted everyone&#8217;s strongly emotional faces beautifully throughout each scene.  The costumes by Patricia Sehar Peerzada were  entrancing, never distracting to the plot.  They blended in beautifully with the stories.</p>
<p>Seeing <a href="http://www.bathwater.org">Bathwater Productions&#8217;</a> <em><strong>Sheherizade</strong></em> was a very joyful and meaningful experience, and like the King in the story I was sorry when it was done and hoped I could hear just one more story before I left.</p>

<p>Michael Driebeek van der Ven begins<em><strong><a href="http://www.fringenyc.org/basic_page.php?ltr=w#Awayof" target="_blank"> A way of Man </a></strong></em>by giving a brief introduction about the story and the nature of storytelling, including a note that &#8211; since the point of storytelling is to help us envision things in one&#8217;s mind&#8217;s eye  &#8211; if the audience wants, we are welcomed to close our eyes and no judgements would be made. Van der Ven is also is responsible for the very subtle yet dramatic dimming and brightening of the lights which help us move through the transitions of seasons and scenes and senses.</p>
<p><span id="more-14138"></span></p>
<p>Caja van der Poel tells us an old story called <em><strong>De Kleine Johannes</strong></em> written in 1886 by a famous Dutch psychiatrist/writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederik_van_Eeden" target="_blank">Frederik van Eeden</a> who coined the term &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream" target="_blank">lucid dream&#8221;</a>.  The English translation is called <em><strong>The Quest</strong></em> and while you can download and read it,  truly what you see at this performance is that storytelling truly is an art.</p>
<p>Asalia Khadjé made the beautiful dress that Caja wears in this performance.</p>

<p>This story is sort of like a science-fiction story where humans are the supernatural figure in a way.  We follow a young boy who makes his way to becoming a man, with all due reflection and curiosity and bravery that anyone could ask &#8230; And a love/hate/respect for Being Human.  Johnathan starts as a boy full of wonder.  So full of wonder that the fantastic reaches out to him and invites him to be their friend.  There is a prejudice against Humans but Johnathan still is curious enough, homesick enough, exploratory enough that he gets sucked back in as a teenager and has to deal with the complexities of learning how to be Human after being a changeling for so many years.</p>
<p>Because of the many influences that the author van Eeden had there are many layers to this story and it is still very relevant today as we traverse the new technologies that make us question what it means to be Human or to &#8220;grow up&#8221; (whatever that means).</p>
<p>Come see this show while you can, whether young or old, its a moving story that I think everyone needs to hear.  And Michael &amp; Caja are some of the most emotive and sensitive storytellers I&#8217;ve ever met, and they&#8217;ll give you their card at the end to stay in touch.  So join the experience while it lasts.</p>
