For those who work in independent film in New York or LA – the announcement that Gen Art has finally become a victim of the recession hits hard.

After 16 amazing years of bringing to the public emerging film, fashion, music, and fantastic parties – Gen Art’s rule has ended.

Last Wednesday a letter to all members, including myself, went out from brothers and founders Ian and Stefan Gerard. “We have now halted all operations, have let go all of our amazing staff, and shuttered the business,” they wrote, adding that they hoped that Gen Art “in some small way was as close to your heart as it was ours.”

What a shock, as only a month ago the New York Film Festival was taking place in Manhattan. They were organized, fun events that always showcased and gave a chance to talent who otherwise would not have had a voice or outlet.

The recession now shakes the art world, and we all feel it – however the loss of a truly unique and ambitious indie company like GenArt will mean a loss for future artists, and filmmakers who won’t be able to have a chance, through a company and festival who was constantly taking chances on new, fresh talent.

Rest in Peace, GEN ART.
