Answers by Julia Sun
(Writer & Performer )

1. Forget the PR version. When you’re talking to your friends, how do you explain this show to them?
Julia: It’s about the insecurity and vainness that every single one of us has. We all want to appear better than we are, so how much bullsh*t can one put up with to present a better version of him/herself? Oh, and it’s meant to be a comedy : )

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?
Julia: I hope they’ll discuss their own stories relating to my character’s – the stories are inside everyone already. I guess it also doesn’t hurt if they remember my name and look for me online (I’m at www.juliasun.tv)

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?
Julia: The character drives the show – not because it’s an one-woman show, but because the persona is always crucial.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?
Julia: Someone sent me this text after a show and I was beyond proud: “you’re sooo hilarious when you sing and dance, I could’t stop laughing, I almost fell off my chair!!! =D ”

5. If money and resources (and even reality) were no object what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless prop, costume, effect – anything – that you would spend money on for this show?
Julia: Ha, a Vegas Cirque du Soleil type stage full of bling! That’ll epically contrast how the character feels.

6. What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to regarding the FRIGID Festival itself?
Julia: Do free food and parties count?

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?
Julia: Everyone will laugh at the comedy, but the drama part, that depends on the people. That being said, drama can be funny, too.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?
Julia: “I looked at him as if I saw the most delicious cheesecake in the world, and then I asked…”

9. What’s the last thing you usually do before the beginning of a show?
Julia: Oh, you know, being happy, being scared, being unsure how I got here in the first place and then glad I did.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?
Julia: My high school crush (name withheld on purpose). I don’t think he ever liked me back and I’d be shocked if he came, awww~

Well, Julia, you never know. Maybe he actually DID have a crush on you too … and he was waiting for the perfect moment to approach A Cute Girl like you! Let’s see if he buys a ticket!

Thanks so much for answering our questions, Julia!

Answers by Michael Curtin and Ruthie Scarpino
(Co-Writers and Performers)

1. Forget the PR version. When you’re talking to your friends, how do you explain this show to them?
Michael: When we are talking to our friends we tell them that it is a murder mystery for young people that we devised to be engaging. We created characters first and found a way to put the story together second.
Ruthie: It is a murder mystery for young people that we devised to be engaging and necessitate young people’s participation. At it’s core it is a laugh out loud comedy with characters that are over the top and a story line that everyone of all ages will enjoy.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?
Michael: I hope they are talking about the big reveal, who they thought it was and when it changed through the show.
Ruthie: I hope they’re talking about the importance of the audience and the interactive components.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?
Ruthie: Comedy drives the show. Subtle nuance: we’re leaving these tiny breadcrumbs for our audience to pick up on. Some are bigger than others, and our audience will probably pick up on breadcrumbs that we didn’t intend to leave.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?
Michael: We had two responses that really stood out to us for different reasons. A fellow performer shared that The Murder At Ginger Creek was her “favorite thing to watch” in the 2015 creative season, while a young viewer told us that The Murder At Ginger Creek was “the only reason I came to came to school.” Both are really meaningful for completely different reasons.

5. If money and resources (and even reality) were no object what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless prop, costume, effect – anything – that you would spend money on for this show?
Michael: We already have extraneously lavish props. Our show features two live horses, a blowing tumbleweed, a leaking sewage pipe, authentic 18th century money, and a family of waterbugs. All of them are totally lavish, brilliantly used, and perfectly imaginary.

6. What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to regarding the FRIGID Festival itself?
Ruthie: Whenever artists talk about FRIGID Festival they always talk about the genuine creative community that pops up every winter to celebrate new, original and exciting work. We are excited to get to be apart of that this year.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?
Ruthie: I think one of the most wonderful things about our show is that every night is different based on audience participation. Our characters can not solve the mystery and clear their names without the help of the audience, so each show has the potential of being drastically different then the one before.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?
Michael: “I just wanna have the pleasure of walking into the kitchen for my afternoon glass of milk, opening the refrigerator door and not being greeted by the carcasses of dead cock-a-roaches.”

9. What’s the last thing you usually do before the beginning of a show?
Ruthie: Someone a long time ago told me that if your sing to yourself it helps with pre show nerves… now it’s habit. I always sing to myself.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?
Michael & Ruthie: —

Wow! It takes a lot to shock these two! Looks like NO ONE would stop them dead in their tracks. You know what that means, don’t you? No matter who you are, you’re welcomed to come down and see this great show!

Answers by Genny Yosco
(playwright, director, co-producer, actor)

1. Forget the PR version. When you’re talking to your friends, how do you explain this show to them?
GENNY: “Hey, remember that weird thing that my mom and I came up with after putting together a children’s show in a week last August? The thing where EVERYONE DIES in The Andy Griffith Show? Well, that’s happening for real now, it got into a festival.”

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?
GENNY: I hope that the fans of The Andy Griffith Show are discussing some of the in-jokes from the TV show (Floyd the Gay Deceiver! Ellie Walker’s mysterious disappearance! The Fun Girls!), and that those who aren’t particularly familiar with the original TV show are discussing some of the weird things I threw in (Barney went full bad-cop on that guy! What lunatic wrote this??)

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?
GENNY: Is “my desperate need for attention” an acceptable answer? Haha, but really, I’d say the decision to throw these characters – who aren’t exactly known for their prowess in law enforcement – into a real, dangerous, grisly situation is what drives most of the plot.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?
GENNY: One thing I’d like to say first and foremost is that I’m a bit of a masochist when it comes to my work: we haven’t done this show before (first performance is at a festival – pressure!!), and we’ll only be doing one week of rehearsals (MORE PRESSURE), but I’m more than confident that my cast can pull it off. But to actually answer your question, one thing that made me proud so far was the cast’s reactions to the script. After tossing and turning with it so much, the script I sent out to them was actually written in two days, and they all seem to think that it’s pretty good, so we’ll see if audiences agree!

5. If money and resources (and even reality) were no object what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless prop, costume, effect – anything – that you would spend money on for this show?
GENNY: Blood. SO much blood. Stage blood, though, not like real blood, I’m not THAT creepy. But yeah, I’d pretty much have everyone coated head-to-toe in blood when they die. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but can you think of the dry-cleaning expenses?? And a few of my actors play more than one character, so the cleanup process would involve a more than a few people hired backstage to help out with that.

6. What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to regarding the FRIGID Festival itself?
GENNY: Okay, so there’s this one other show at the festival that I’ve been freaking out over – Li’l Women, A Rap Musical. It seems like something I’d do, haha! I really want to see all of the other shows!! I’m also excited for the theater that they put us in – it’s the biggest theater we’ve ever worked in! Plus getting into a festival is SUCH a cool thing, I still really can’t believe it. I know you asked for one thing, and that’s two, sorry. I ramble.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?
GENNY: There are two moments in this show that could either go REALLY well, or tank miserably depending on the audience! I don’t want to give too much away, but I feel like some people could either really appreciate what I’ve done, or get horribly offended.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?
GENNY: “And her owning some kind of…or food-based whore house? Andy, whoever thought up a story like that would CLEARLY be out of their mind.”

9. What’s the last thing you usually do before the beginning of a show?
GENNY: Panic over the audience. During our Halloween show, I was panicking over how the audience was only half filled, and during our New Year’s Eve show, I was panicking over the fact that so many people bought tickets that we had to add seats to the audience to accommodate them all. It’s always something, haha.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?
GENNY: Andy Griffith. Why is he here? Who invited him? Is he going to try to sue us??

Well, I’ve got great news for you, Genny – he’s not going to sue you because he died in 2012. No wonder you’re so shocked to see him! But if you DID see him out there I’d say it’s because he thought, after reading this 1o Things To Know feature, that it sounded like a terrific show that he just couldn’t miss! Thanks so much for answering our questions, Genny!

“This is not your father’s burlesque show,” intones host Atlanta Georgia (Marlena Kalm) to the assemblage who stare at the three preening women who are outfitted in sky-high heels, racy bodices and flirty skirts of the schoolgirl-gone-bad-kilt and tutu variety. With glittery winks and flicking hips these three women ooze dangerous sex appeal and edgy one-liners (I’m like a happy meal … I come with toys). They are daring and flirty and dirty and in control – demanding that the squeamish leave the building so that they can get on with the show. “We know how you like it …” they taunt, “And we know why you keep it a secret from Wifey.”

Welcome to Daughters of Lot (written by Alexis Roblan and directed by Rachel Kerry) where the Bible Belt meets the Garter Belt, where Feminism has as many meanings as Eskimos have words for snow and where women run the gamut from young and innocent to young and jaded. If you’re looking for a man here you’ll find him only when he’s being channelled by one of the women, when he’s being serviced (unseen) by one of his daughters backstage, or when you look to your left at the guy sitting next to you.

Daughters of Lot (L-R: Naomi Bland, Rebecca Gray Davis, Marelena Kalm | Photo credit: Nicholas Grant)

As Atlanta plays ringmaster to One (Stav Meishar) and Two (Caitlin Mehner) the three women proudly bring forth a daring exhibit: the real daughters of Lot who arrive like relics, wrapped in artifacts, inside big dresses but they are nonetheless excited to be there once they get over the rift in the fabric of time.

There’s a lot going on here so let me boil it down to the most important take-aways. Three narratives are presented and intertwined but they all deal with one theme and all weigh the same issues to see how the scales balance: is Woman a victim or is she the victor? (It should be noted that “Atlanta” means “balance”.)

Story one is the very constructs of the play: burlesque and all its forms – from the theatrical to the modest and reserved. Regardless of attire a woman teases and beguiles — offers up her most private moves and rituals for an audience. By doing so has she conquered them? Or is she theirs to use up and toss aside? Second story: The actual story of Lot’s daughters. There has always been some debate as to who did what to whom after they fled Sodom & Gomorrah. Mother, turned to salt, could no longer service their father. Did the daughters take it upon themselves to “know” their father … to save the human race? Or did the father simply continue a practice he’d started long before they fled? Then there’s the third story of Atalanta (or Atlanta – there are 2 versions which are told to the daughters of Lot). The story is basically one of a young maiden who is not interested in marriage and plays at being a boy to get away from her suitors. A race is held – the winner will get her hand. She enters the race herself hoping to claim herself at the end, only to get distracted by some apples (maaaaagic apples). Long story short, in the end she marries the guy who won the race. Happy ending? That’s a matter of perspective. In fact – it’s all a matter of perspective. Which is the one big theme: victim or victor?

Two (Caitlin Mehner) holds down Atlanta (Marelena Kalm) as One (Stav Meishar) jeers | Photo credit: Nicholas Grant

Throughout the hour Daughter 1 (Naomi Bland) and Daughter 2 (Rebecca Gray Davis) play the straight man, as it were, and allow Atlanta and crew to zip them (and us) through a cliff notes version of what it feels like for a girl, always driving home the point of balance. Bland and Davis do a wonderful job at convincingly portraying newly-hatched women who are window shopping in the Mall of Female Stereotypes where each conceivable brand of woman is, in turn, either celebrated or bashed. However, no matter what lessons Atlanta and her One and Two can provide for the Daughters the story of Lot must play out as it should. While the idea of who the aggressor is - at least from this tale’s context – seems fixed, the question of their perspective having been polluted becomes a weightier question thanks to the new stories that have been interwoven with theirs.

This play was originally longer and cut to fit FRIGID’s 1 hour time-frame, which I knew going in. I’m not sure that Daughters of Lot works best as a one hour show; possibly making it even a bit shorter might have worked, though when taking out important moments it’s difficult to know which will resonate with the audience and which won’t – and ultimately you want to leave the audience with a thoughtful piece of theatre, not a hacked-up poetry reading, so it’s impossible for me to say what- other than the original format -would best serve this play. I would very much enjoy seeing the full, uncut version in order to experience the original pacing and impact.

When these women announce at the top of the show that this is not your father’s burlesque show – and not for the squeamish – they’re correct. I doubt there was a man in the audience who expected to be challenged so directly by women wearing so little. I could tell it made some of them uncomfortable. Frankly, this story should have made people uncomfortable starting a long time ago. Go back and read the original if you need a refresher and then go see Daughters of Lot for a new perspective.
