Karen Tortora-Lee’s Question
That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
The Osatos: LOL: The End is a funny and physical look at natural and human-made disasters seen through the eyes of three clowns. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of destruction we all live with, our family looked to clowns with the hope that by allowing the “idiot” to interpret for us, that we would be better able to understand disaster and find the ways that still remain to come out hopeful and laughing. LOL: The End as a title came about through a back and forth juggling of the ideas of the show between us sisters. Natural disaster, apocalypse, human created unjust catastrophes, the media, the future, hope…ultimately LOL: The End made the most sense.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
The Osatos: We’d put on the VIP list:

Our Obachan (grandmother), she lives in Japan, and is the most graceful, loving, thoughtful person we know. We want her to see this show because she inspires us in all we do, including creating and performing this show. Also our grandmother on our mother’s side, we never met her, but this would probably be a great way to meet and get to know each other.

Paul Robeson, a true renaissance person, a brilliant artist, activist, and athlete (among many other things), and always found a way to bring all of these elements of his life together. A quote we love of his: “The artist must elect to fight for slavery or freedom. I have made my choice.”

Charlie Chaplin, his work has kept us laughing and inspired for some time now, I mean duh he’s a genius. And his grandson James Thiérrée, who we’ve had the privilege of witnessing his wonder and has pushed us to imagine beyond all we can see to create the worlds we want.

Naomi Klein, her work The Shock Doctrine has really informed and inspired our work, oh we’d be so honored to have her at the show.

All of these people we’d be so excited to be there, can you all invite them??? :)

Antonio Minino’s Questiona
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
The Osatos: The biggest sacrifice I and we have made for our art has been working on this show, and making the choice to work so intensely together as a family. There are many people who would never try to create and perform a show with their family while also living all together for the first time in years. Like a family vacation, spending all of this time and having these experiences together has had it’s challenges but has ultimately been incredible. Individually and as a group, we have continued to learn and grow every moment we have been working on this show. Though we have made this show a priority and have sacrificed the rest of our lives and time to work on this project, it’s been worth every second.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
The Osatos: Something that has been unexpected is how the project has just grown and grown and gathered more and more of our family. It has been our closest friends and family who have been helping with every aspect of the show. It seems like there is a place and need for everyone’s talents and we are SO grateful to everyone’s kindness and generosity! This show is being made through a collaboration of love by a huge family that spans continents and we are so extremely excited to begin sharing it with audiences at the FRIGID NY Festival.

What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
The Osatos: Joy! Love! Laughter! Hope! Thought! Thinking! Anything/Everything!

Karen Tortora-Lee’s Question
That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Andrew: The title, ‘Til Love Do Us Part, comes from the legendary phrase commonly used in marriage ceremonies: ‘Til Death Do Us Part. A friend of mine read the play, which at the time was entitled The Eulogy of an Endless Marriage. She hated the title. She began to make countless suggestions. And then she said it. She meant to say it should be retitled ‘Til Death Do Us Part, but she accidentally said “Love” instead of “Death.” And it made so much sense to me. The play on words has become a dark symbol of the love/hate relationship the audience watches develop over time.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Andrew: I would have to say 1) Stephen Sondheim – my musical theatre aspirations have led to the development of the play’s dissonant musical underscore. He would appreciate it. 2) Tim Burton – my love of dark quirky characters with such specific attention to detail has led to very specific detail in the script of this play. 3) Edward Albee – my understanding and obsession with complex love/hate relationships begins in my personal life and then extends into theater with plays such as “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” Only then could I appreciate the absurdity of it all. 4) Edgar Allan Poe – of course I would want the father of dark stories and characters to be in the audience, and 5) Charles Addams – if anyone would understand what I’m trying to accomplish with the characters in this play, it would be him.

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Andrew: The biggest sacrifice I’ve ever made for my art was in an unusual way the main reason I wrote this play. I eventually had to choose between my art and what I thought at the time to be true love. I chose art. I had to write this play about giving up everything for love to make myself understand and move on. I am hoping that when I sit in Under St. Marks Theater watching ‘Til Love Do Us Part with its first real audience, I will smile with the reaffirmed knowledge that it was all worth it.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Andrew: Besides finally understanding why playwrights drink? … But seriously, I can’t think of any specific discoveries. I wish I could share one.

Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Andrew: In an ideal world, I hope that through the theatricality, the music, and the intimate dramatic scenes, the audience will take part in the seventy-year relationship they see before them. Love. Hate. Death. And from that (to answer the question), I believe a deeper meaning will come. I will say this: I ask a lot of the audience in this show, but I think those who take the journey will find it worthwhile. I definitely did.

Azana: It’s an insinuation that I’m an airhead, aerialist and air-sign. It alludes to lofty ideals but also quirky action. It suggests slightly more than acting, but confirms nothing. It’s as vaugly expressive as I am.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Azana: They will all be there; grandmother, mother, stepsister, childhood friend and ex-lover. The bringing together of all facets of my life, those who were and are close. Different parts merging together to experience the expression of my perspective.

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Azana: Absolutely everything. Security, safety, sanity, family. Free health care. Life on the beach. It better be worth it.

Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Azana: Urr, umm crazy emotional depths that require attention. all sorts of stuff… I do not have the stamina of a teenager.

What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Azana: I would hope entertainment, introspection and speculation. I want people to marvel, at the world, at themselves, at what they have just seen.

Evan, a woman’s studies major, is writing a killer senior thesis– by becoming a stripper at her favorite strip club. In between her current girlfriend, a stripper-lesbian, and her ex boyfriend, an unemployed Tisch graduate, Evan dances the line between love and betrayal. A comedy about what it really means to be ‘in love with a stripper’ and what it means to become one.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Kate Foster (The Playwright): The title was the joke that fit. When I was writing the play, I would tell interested parties I was writing about strippers and lesbians. People kept on giving me the classic double-take, so I had a feeling Stripper-Lesbians was onto something.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Joe Beaudin (Actor, Role of DJ): Bono – Because I love him and he is a rock star and very famous
My Grandma – Because she was sassy and would appreciate the “material”
My friends Dina & Amy – because they are lesbians.
My wife – because she is my wife and she usually comes to these things.
My soon-to-be-born child – because she/he needs to see what her/his father LOVES to do.
Its important to note that Kate & Samantha both want to invite Hugh Hefner just because.

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Jeff Woodbridge (Director): I sold or gave away everything I owned, except some clothing, and moved to New York with no job waiting, no apartment lined up, and very little money. Just went because I knew this is where I wanted to make theater and it has been the best move ever. I’m not sure I would really call the things I’ve done for my art ‘sacrifices’ because everything always works out for the best. It’s more like taking a leap of faith and trusting that everything will be fine.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Amanda Berry (Actress/Role of Evan): Oh my gosh, so many. The one that was most surprising to me was that originally DJ and Evan were just roommates and best friends. However, at some point during the development – and I’ve totally forgotten how this came about – someone brought up that they felt that there was something more to that relationship, that they had previously dated. This just added so much to the piece as a whole, in that it expanded DJ’s character and motivations, it gives Aisha more to play off of, and it makes Evan’s story into that of someone who’s questioning her sexuality and who is dealing with her first homosexual relationship. That one change just added heaps to the text and it gives us as actors a much stronger emotional base to play on.

Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Samantha Cooper (Actress, role of Aisha): I found that I had my own issues with strippers and stripping that I had to let go of. I started out judging Aisha and that is a trap for an actor. I think I learned a bit of what Aisha wants Evan to realize – that a person cannot be defined by her occupation. I hope it makes them think about gender roles, the complications that can arise in relationships – perhaps it will make them take a look at their own relationships. And maybe, like me, the play will challenge people’s ideas about stripping. Questions are always a good thing. And discussions about the questions are even better.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
JD: Drowning Ophelia is an homage and riff off of the classic Hamlet story. After her self-proclaimed “tragic” drowning, Ophelia finds herself in purgatory with nothing to do. When the story comes back to her, four hundred years later, will she drown in the details over again or rise above?

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
JD: Who would I invite? Tough one!

We’d invite Bill Shakespeare first to see the show- just to see if he’d approve. I’m sure if Bill was alive today he’d love guitars and mics… at least we hope so.

I’d love to invite Richard Burbage and the unidentified original actor that played Ophelia to the performance as well. Two actors that created these iconic roles, we’re sure would love to see their original creations in a much different light.

John Cameron Mitchell would be next for showing us that rock musicals really can rock and inspiring stories in the musical theatre world that take risks.

Lastly? I’m sure Sylvia Plath would have fun. No real reason other than having another whiny suicidal girl in the room, I guess.

What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
JD: [editor's note: this question was left mysteriously blank.  I can only assume that JD's sacrifice was 1) so enormous it's too big to talk about and 2) well worth it.  Or, you know ... not.]

Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
JD: The biggest discovery made over the course of our process has been the amazing, and undeniable realization that not only can new theatre transform the human experience but also effectively transform an worn story into something equally as moving in its own distinct way.

What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
JD: At RIFF, we hope that our audiences take home the experience of seeing a story in a completely different way. By providing this to you, our audience, we’re inviting you to make a new decision about a character, a new discovery about that moment that always confused you, or a new dilemma to walk into the next production of the classic with. All in all, we hope to stimulate old stories to stimulate your mind today.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Moe: The title has to do with my name and changing it, that is so impossible to understand that I literally had to write a one man show about it in order to explain it to friends.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Moe: My drama teacher Mima Hoyes, who kicked me out of drama when I was 14. Ken Slevin, the head of my agency, who I invited but I know he doesn’t go see a lot of shows. My former neighbor Josh Ozersky aka Mr. Cutlets, who I invited, but he has short term memory problems. My cousin Rich, who is camera #1 for The View, but he has to get up really early all the time and has kids. My dad, but he claims to not like entertainment or being entertained.

Antonio Minino’s QuestionWhat is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Moe: Moving and immigrating from Canada to NYC. Yes it was totally worth it.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Moe: If I really concentrate I can make a story linear in time. (Thanks PMM!)

Moe: Mostly really good vibes and lots of laughs because it’s really ridiculous.

I will challenge Emleigh Wolf’s The Terrible Manpain of Umberto MacDougal show because I respect the depth of his pain.

Well, that’s mighty kind of you, Moe.  Contributing to the terrible manpain by any means necessary is something I’m sure Umberto would greatly appreciate.  PLUS, Umberto threw SCISSORS so that’s a WIN for you and Umberto must suffer the terrible manpain of Deaaaaath.

Both Love In The Time Of Clamydia and Initium/Finis challenged everyone and both threw ROCK so that’s a tie in those two rounds. You were also challenged by The Rope In Your Hands. Guess what?  She also threw ROCK.  Another tie.

So, I’m only going to explain this once – one win and three ties means you escape Deaaaaath and come out pretty okay.  Not bad Moe, not bad at all.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Bill: It’s based on the true story of a man who was trapped in his car for five days. He survived for five days by eating condiment packets.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Bill: There are a ton of people I admire, but if the first to leap to mind are:

• Playwright Mary Jo Pehl (and her husband), because she hasn’t seen our production yet, and they’ve been hugely supportive
• Anyone from the crew at Kickstarter, who helped us fund the production
• Peter Brook, a huge influence on me through his books, because though I would probably live in mortal fear, I’d love to know what he thought
• H. J. Heinz, for obvious reasons

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Bill: In the first production I ever produced, we did such a terrible job of advertising that we actually bought tickets on a credit card so that we’d have an audience for our actors. And yes, it was worth it.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Bill: The show is still as funny as I remember thinking it would be when I read the script, but it’s a much darker comedy than I thought. You’re watching a man fight off starvation by eating ketchup, and the comedy comes from recognizing how you would probably act in that situation. You’re laughing, and wincing, at yourself.

Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Bill: Entertainment, first and foremost. Everything else is just icing.

Karen Tortora-Lee’s Question
That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Ron: They were “Musical Pawns” in a deadly game of political chess.
There are many governments who still try to suppress the arts and especially music. In Turkey it is still dangerous to play Kurdish folk-tunes. The government fears the music may spur “Nationalist feelings” among the Kurds, who will try to separate from the country and form their own independent state. Cambodian music and dance found safe refuge in Canada and the United States and other Western democracies during the Kymer Rouge period, before being restored to its original home. . There are many, many examples where music, poetry and religion are considered dangerous. Think of what’s happening now in Tibet! Even Elvis Presley, and The Bare Naked Ladies have had their troubles with bureaucracy and they live(d) in a modern democracy!

In the case of David Nowakowsky (1848-1921) his music disappeared until 1989. Even his tomb-stone was destroyed!
I am trying to tell the story as political satire, and to have as much fun with the political absurdities as I can. The music is drop-dead gorgeous. The Dance numbers are insanely funny. I can say this in all modesty, because I only wrote the words. The music (for the most part) is Nowakowsky’s and the dances were created by Sean Hawk, one of our multi-talented singing-acting-dancing performers.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Ron: I’d invite Catherine the Great, Emperess of Russia. She gets a “thumbs-up”, for allowing Catholics, Protestants, Greeks, Dukhabors, Freemasons and Jews to live in Odessa in relative freedom, and for trying to improve the educational level of her subjects. She gets a thumbs-down for not extending these same freedoms to the Ukrainian people.
Next on the list are Vannessa Redgrave, Eileen Atkins and Vannessa’s brother, Corin Redgrave, for inviting me to sing at Union Square Theater in New York, and then later to sing and tell my story in Hammersmith England. They were the first to recognize the importance of Nowakowsky’s music and of the story it conveys. Without their encouragement, I would have given up a long time ago.
Next I’d invite all my Cantorial colleagues who snicker every time I mention Nowakowsky’s name. (Oh, There he goes again with this Nowakowsky nonsense.)
And Finally, Cantor David Lefkowitz, who has done more to promote Nowakowsky’s music than anyone, save for Nowakowsky’s surviving family, who would have been a lot richer had they been resigned to let their Great-Great Grandfather’s music disappear, once again, into obscurity.

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Ron:The only thing I’ve sacrificed for my art is money. I’ve seen plenty of super-rich people who are miserable; I’ve probably gone through my children’s inheritance ten times over, but they still love me, so I can’t say its a sacrifice at all!

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Ron:This show has been “in development” for over 20 years, so there were lots of unexpected events.
The first surprise was when I phoned up 93-year-old Oscar Pichon, one of Nowakowsky’s Grandsons, who was living in Toronto. He had been bed-ridden for the last three years due to a serious heart ailment. I told him my name and he answered: “Graner! Graner! Did you know an Irwin Graner??
I said “Yes.” Irwin was my Father and he died 5-years ago in 1986.”
Oscar the told me that he first met my Father in 1930 as a young immigrant to Canada, and that they were best friends, -eating at each other’s homes, working in the same securities office. -in fact, they were inseparable.
Eventually Oscar got a job in Montreal and they lost touch. I was one of the last people to talk to Osacar before he died.
The next surprise was to discover that My paternal Grand-Mother’s maiden name was Geller, and that she came from a “musical” family in Odessa. Israel Geller was Nowakowsky’s assistant organist. Geller had walked out of Russia in 1921 with an armful of Nowakowsky manuscripts that had been left in the organ bench, scooping them up, just before the Bolsheviks seized the Synagogue. I have not yet been able to confirm whether-or-not I’m related to Israel Geller, who died in 1956.
It was the Geller collection of manuscripts that Cantor David Lefkowitz used to create the first Nowakowsky concert in 75 years. After the concert, faculty at Hebrew Union College, informed David Lefkowitz that there were another 5,300 pages of unpublished manuscripts stored in the basement of the college. It took Cantor Lefkwitz another 10 years to edit the manuscripts, which had been half-buried on Chosal’s farm in Archamps during the 2nd world war to save them from the Nazis.
When I went to “La Ferme Chosal” in 2010, no one in the community had ever heard about Nowakowsky, and had no idea what treasures had been buried in their midst.
One of my dreams is to give a concert of the music, in the very place where they had been saved!

What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Ron: I hope they get a fuzzy-warm feeling in their hearts from listening to this very special and beautiful music.

Ron!  How delightful that image is … you, sipping tea, reading Jane Austen and humming a Nowakowsky tune.  Only to have it shattered as the Rock Paper Scissors Tournament of Deaaaaath turns it all upside down and Afternoon Tea With Jane Austen pummels you with her ROCK.  Then in comes Love in the Time of Chlamydia who challenged everyone with ROCK … another DEAAAAATH.   I almost don’t want to look anymore.  But wait – it’s true.  Initium/Finis – another show who took on everyone - pummels you with ROCK.  That’s three Deaaaaaths.  So much for your afternoon tea.  It might have been better to pick one of those Nowakowsky papers and smother them all!  But, it’s too late now.  I am truly sorry about that, Ron.  I hope at least that the tea was good while it lasted.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Rachelle: INTRO… I had just returned from Kenya and found the experience left me feeling overwhelmed with tears of joy and sadness. When girls grow up, have kids, and get married, and pursue a satisfying carreer…or not get married, not have kids but pursue a career, we’re expected to get our emotions together and we’re not supposed to cry. The reality is that we do cry and we want to cry. We also live in a society where people shut themselves off from their emotions and my job is to delve deeply into feelings and share them with the world.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Rachelle: My father, who passed away two years ago. He was an inspiration and hugely supportive of my work.
Lady Gaga, an original and a huge risk-taker.
Sam Kinison. I love his comedy and the quote I always have in my head is “get your f*** personality in line!”
My husband, a doctor who’s putting his job on hold, taking care of our kids for ten days while I’m following my dream.
Picasso, another risk-taker, prolific, and my favorite artist.

What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Rachelle: Every time I leave my family it’s a big sacrifice. My art was my first child though so the moments doing my work are precious and rewarding.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Rachelle: I have been exploring my heritage in this show, analyzing and dissecting that part of my personality. My dual American-Haitian heritage has shaped who I am and influenced choices throughout my life, and in developing this piece I have (re?) discovered that aspect.

Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Rachelle: I hope they leave with a new awareness of what you see is not necessarily what you get, and that nature and nurture play strong, dual roles. I play with what lies beneath my own stereotype.

That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Andrew: Our show is inspired by the Grimm Brothers fairy tale The Musicians of Brementown, sometimes referred to as the Traveling Musicians. While the title is not terribly original, we hope our animal glam rock band interpretation is.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Andrew: The Brothers Grimm of course. Hopefully Jacob and Wilhelm would be pleased, and a little surprised. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and his Harem of Chickens. They would understand our show on the deepest level.

What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Andrew: We once carried a male mannequin half way across the continent by train. Early one morning at the Minneapolis train depot the man took one look at the wooden foot sticking out of a re-purposed guitar case and said, “we can’t check your wooden leg sir.” A few crocodile tears later, they did check our wooden leg. And the rest as they say, is history. Worth it? You bet your leg.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Andrew: Many unexpected discoveries, many we can not share, but we can tell you this: animals do it best. And yes, by “it” I do mean perform in a theatrical rock band. Believe me, we were as surprised as you are now to learn this.

What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Andrew: We sincerely hope to melt your beautiful faces off with our fiery blast of rock.
