Strangedog Theatre’s Basic Help begins with a situation that is all too familiar to anyone who has ever spent endless minutes weaving through the labyrinth of telephone prompts in the hopes of eventually getting to speak with a live person who can actually help you.

We first come upon Cynthia (Megan Greener) at this exact moment of human contact. Cynthia is so startled and relieved to talk to a human being that the first thing she does is relate her frustration at being navigated through an endless maze to finally get to an actual rep. The phone-chain hierarchy is described perfectly – beginning with the the remote, robotic push 1 for this, 2 for that menu options which lead to the more interactive but no less animatronic“Okay. I heard you say such-and-such. Is that correct? Okay. One moment while I check that …”

So of course when Cynthia is finally connected with Simon (Gavin Earl Johnson) who answers the line with a scripted version of Thank you for calling Magicprep Kitchenware where all you kitchen prep is magic. What is the name of the Magicprep Kitchenware customer I have the pleasure of speaking with? is it any wonder that she demands verification that he is, in fact, human – and not just an even more clever version of robotic technology who will be of no more help to her than all the others?

On the surface, Cynthia seems a bit high strung. I mean, really – it’s just kitchenware. Does having a blender which makes an unexpected noise warrant a flood of crazy-lady rantings and accusations? Whether it does or doesn’t, Simon isn’t paid to really respond thoughtfully or give actual conversation anyway. He’s just meant to help the customer on the other end of the line, ask them if there’s any thing else he can help them with today, wish them a nice day, and sign off so that he can answer the next call. Simple.

Only it’s not that simple. Yes, Cynthia is high strung – but there’s a reason. And Simon does have more thoughtful, more conversational responses – he’s just not expected to voice them. So when Cynthia calls back the next day on some other pretext about her blender (“I lied to you when you asked if it was a gift …”) it gives the two a chance to connect a bit deeper – but only just. It’s enough of a connection, however, for Simon to give Cynthia his direct extension so that she can bypass the maze and get him directly. On the one hand, this is crazy. She’s obviously got a lot of time on her hands – she will obviously call again. On the other hand … not so crazy. Because she will obviously call again.

And so begins a strange friendship. And it is a friendship. The wonderful thing that playwright Ben Clawson has a gift for understanding is that the human mind is a complex thing and not all connections need to be romantic in order for them to be deeply moving and affecting. Director Artem Yatsunov interprets this beautifully. While there is most definitely a type of playfulness which grows between Cynthia and Simon as the phone calls become a daily ritual, the intimacy – and there is definitely intimacy – never crosses into coy flirtation. Nevertheless Yatsunov makes it obvious that these two human beings – without seeing each other, without REALLY knowing each other beyond the scope of these brief daily interactions, have created a bond which both rely on. Sometimes emotional intimacy is more of a life preserver than any other kind of intimacy. But, like a life-preserver, some intimacies are self contained and serve only one purpose – and aren’t useful unless you’re lost at sea.

The feasibility of BASIC HELP sits squarely on the shoulders of Greener and Johnson and both do a wonderful job of breathing life into their characters. Even more-so, their nuanced performance allows you to watch as they grow closer, even as the two actors never lock eyes or even face each other. No small feat. In just the act of simple phone calls they call forth humor, poignancy and even emptiness. They succeed in finding things that not only connect them to each other, but to the audience as well.

Musician David Byrne said “Sometimes it’s a form of love just to talk to somebody that you have nothing in common with and still be fascinated by their presence.” Do Cynthia and Simon fascinate one another? To an extent. They certainly intrigue one another. And at the time their phone calls happen they wake each other up a bit.

BASIC HELP does a beautiful job of exploring unexpected connections found in strange places which can lead us to decisions we wouldn’t have been brave enough to make otherwise. We live in a society where we can disclose our innermost thoughts on Tumblr anonymously via a screen name such as starburstfireflygrrrrl and get more support from Gothgrrrl92 than we do our own friends IRL. This simply underscores how the scenario of BASIC HELP is more accessible and commonplace than we think. Making friends with a stranger who we will never meet or talk to again? It happens every day. And if you think it doesn’t – remember this review the next time you’re pouring your heart out to the faceless masses on line. Think of BASIC HELP. And know: someone’s listening. And someone’s always there to give help – basic or otherwise.

Answers by Rebecca Perry
(actor/playwright)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

RP: It’s a story that stems from the real life experiences myself and other twenty-something graduates had while working at a coffee shops in Toronto. Every graduate gets out into the big, bad world and is eager to prove themselves…except in this economy a lot of us have to grab a full-time service job immediately to start paying off debt before we even receive our diploma. So what do you do? How do you make the most out of this “in-between” time in your life? And THAT is what this story is about: enter Joanie Little, a feisty redhead and wannabe biologist/primatologist ready to take on the world. If she can’t immediately be “the next Jane Goodall” of the world (because she has to pay the bills first) then you better bet she is gonna make this hip coffee shop her new “jungle” and the customers will be the “chimps” she shall observe! Cue: lots of caffeinated situations, songs and scenarios.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

RP: How they can relate to it! Be it comparing their crappy university jobs or the job they use to pay the bills (as an artist I know we’ve all had odd “survival” jobs at various points in our lives) and knowing that it happens to the best of us. Everyone has had an “in-between” point in their lives and everyone gets through it in a different way.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

RP: Character and how she deals with the overall theme of standing on your own two feet.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

RP: When at The Winnipeg Festival someone wrote an anonymous review and commented on the songs in the show saying “This girl sounds like Judy Garland…I wanted to take a bath in her voice”. We laughed for hours because it was an odd compliment but it also attests to the hard work we put into our songs used in the show.

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

RP: Hello making coffee onstage! I also would have a full orchestra behind me for the songs I sing.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

RP: A flashing sign that represents the sign for The Coffeeshop! As glamorous as possible.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

RP: YES! Oh man…every night I have no clue how the audience will react to a situation Joanie gets into with Sonia (a not-so-nice co-worker) where she discovers Sonia is quite friendly with cocaine. Some people find it funny and others find it shocking.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

RP: “Everyone has their guilty pleasure…what’s yours Sonia?”

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

RP: Yes, this show is based on a myriad of experiences I had in a coffee shop that exists in Toronto. Half of these situations happened to me and the other half to previous co-workers. Joanie is, in a way, representing the experience of the graduated twenty-something and their first experience out of school and into the real world.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

RP: Because I am covered in maple syrup. (You will understand once you see the show).

Answers by Gregg Barrios
(playwright)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

GB: The PR version is actually quite accurate and uncensored. It’s the provincial media that tend to “soften” the descriptive word of “queer” with the word “gay.”

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

GB: First, the play has many layers starting with the history of Herb Alpert’s A&M Record label. Also how DJ culture evolved from the early days in NYC – Larry Levan, Jellybean Benitez, Junior Vasquez, etc. There is also a brief history of gay theater- including a gay send-up of Hamlet. If they even ask about one of those things, I think we’re got them hook, line, and sinker.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

GB: Definitely the main character Amado Guerrero Paz who morphs his name into Warren Peace when he becomes a DJ.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

GB: It’s the way people connect with the music. Everyone in the audience will recognize one of the songs the DJ plays and the memory of the song(s) makes them realize how they reacted emotionally to the same music that the DJ plays and calls the “fucking soundtrack of my life!”

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

GB: Of course, it would change. The piece premiered at nearly two hours including intermission. It also had multi-media, dancers, and music videos. It was a DJ musical if you will. For FRIGID, we are doing a stripped down version – “I-DJ Unplugged.” And that is very cool too.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

GB: I’d love to see “I-DJ” premiere at Studio 54 when it was a dance club.
I’d bring in some of the A&M artists to guest each night. Peter Frampton, Chris Montez, Sting, Herb Alpert, Janet Jackson, etc.

Fantasy aside, I’d invest the first million dollars in getting more production and show opportunities for the theater scene in San Antonio Texas, where our resident company, Overtime Theater, is theater for the people.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

GB: That would be up to the audience. But I hope they come away each night with the knowledge that AIDS deeply affected our theater and arts community then and even now. And despite the fact that this is a tragicomedy, I hope that resonate each night with the audience.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

GB: There are so many. And each time I see it, I’ll find a new one that resonates with the audience. Here are two: “Warren, your saving grace is that you realize that only ze musique is important, and the rest is merde.” And of course Warren’s as Ham-A-Lot, “To be, or not to be, a dame or a Great Dane.”

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

GB: Absolutely! Go to any dance club, rave, gay bar, experimental art happening. You’ll find it in spades! And it’s not going away anytime soon.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

GB: KAREN CARPENTER, ROLLERENA and LARRY KRAMER. I’d be shocked because without their influence, I never would have been able to write “I-DJ”.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH

In the THM virtual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH which FRIGID Show do you take on? And what do you throw?

Ben, a straight Mormon guy caught in the middle between his church and his many close gay friends, attempts to understand the intersection of religious faith and sexual identity by interviewing gay and lesbian Mormons around the country. Ben Abbott plays both interviewer and subjects in this funny, challenging, and poignant one-man show based on actual interviews. Questions of the Heart is almost certainly the first fringe play ever to have been performed successfully at both a Mormon church and a gay bar.

Answers by Ben Abbott
(playwright and actor)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

BA: I interviewed a wide range of gay and lesbian Mormons who’ve had vastly different experiences from each other let alone me. Some are closeted, some are out, some have left the church far behind, some are still faithful, and most are a complicated combination of those things and more. I originally wanted to find out what the Queer Mormon experience was, but I learned that it’s all so much more complicated than any single experience. On the surface, the show is about Mormons, but really it’s about what happens when deeply rooted identity and beliefs conflict.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

BA: I hope they’re talking about the characters and their stories. Each one defies expectations and challenges assumptions, and each one deserves to be remembered.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

BA: The engine of the show is my character’s need to understand and reconcile what’s become the great contradiction of his life. He starts pretty naively, but as he goes on, his image and understanding of his own faith and culture is challenged and complicated. He’s got to reconcile this new, uncomfortable information with a lifetime of belief and practice and figure out who and what he is in this new reality. I say “he” which is weird because I’m playing myself. You might guess that the process of making this play has been an interesting one.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

BA: “You put a face on a group of people that I never considered, and you did more to humanize and make me feel empathy for them than I thought was possible.” I love that quote because it’s actually two quotes: One person said it referring to Mormons, and another said it referring to gays and lesbians.

Also (if I may indulge): “I’m Catholic/Jewish/Evangelical Christian (etc.). I thought this was going to be about Mormons, but it’s about ME.”

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

BA: You mean if I didn’t have to fit the entire production into a suitcase?! I would be much more messy. I have hours of interview tapes and hundreds of pages of interview notes and transcripts. They all conflict with and challenge each other. I would love to physicalize that with the set and props, and have enough space to embody the internal whirlwind more.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

BA: A giant, golden, Angel Moroni (that statue on the top of Mormon temples) for absolutely no reason. And I would never refer to it or even acknowledge that it was there.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

BA: One man’s story near the end of the play is so seemingly contradictory but powerful that I can never anticipate how people will respond to him. Whatever side you’re on, his story challenges the very idea of sides or a right/wrong binary. Depending on the audience it plays as funny, tragic, pathetic, inspiring, you name it. It’s always a surprise and I love hearing people in the same audience have opposite reactions to the same moment.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

BA: “We have to make room at the table for Paul.”

Or, “If you’re going to be born gay, don’t be born Mormon.”

Or, “It’s ‘us.’ It’s ‘us!’ There is no ‘them’ and ‘us.’”

(I’m clearly not good at this “pick one” business.)

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

BA: Yes. These are real people, and as weird and strange and unbelievable the world of the play is, it’s their lives.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

BA: Someone from the presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (aka the Mormon church). 1. What are they doing at a fringe festival? 2. Is it good news or bad news that they know about this show?

Answers by Maria Wojciechowski
(writer and performer)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

MW: When I describe my show to friends I tell them it’s about mental illness, specifically my battle with bipolar disorder. It is a solo sketch show that is confessional, I suppose. I don’t know I’m bad at summarizing.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

MW: When the audience leaves… well I hope they say they enjoy it, but I also hope they relate to it. As far a specific part, of course there are bits that are my favorite, but I’d be happy if any of it strikes a chord.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

MW: Theme drives my show for sure. Each of my characters are based on different elements of my experience with bipolar disorder and the monologues in between are there to unify the piece.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

MW: I’ve gotten “I laughed so hard, I cried, and then I cried so hard, I laughed.” As a performer, affecting people emotionally is so incredible. And it’s like I always say, “You aren’t really a comedian if you don’t make the audience cry six or seven times during your set.”

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

MW: Definitely. Right now it’s designed for an intimate setting. I’d need more showgirls if it were on Broadway.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

MW: A yacht I guess. I like being on the water, and that seems pretty luxurious. Maybe an island. Maybe I’d buy an island.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

MW: My show is very personal, and my mom and my sister will be there opening night. It will be the first time they’ve seen it, and I’m terrified. I’m sure there will be different reactions that night. Also the show as a whole can go either way. Sometimes audiences take the monologues very seriously when I wrote them to be lighthearted.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

MW: “You’re lucky.” My favorite character in the show says it. And I don’t know why, but it’s a really fun line for me to say.

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

MW: Yes. In fact, most of the characters are based off of my own experience. I would want a world where these characters are accepted rather than ridiculed.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

MW: My dad. I’d be shocked because I would have taken out a few more cuss words had I known he were coming. I’m a wimp.

Answers by Ryan Emmons (Director)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

RE: The play looks at what happens when two New Yorkers meet and fall in love only to realize that they are each one of the recipients of Jerry Orbach’s donated eyes. This realization causes them to question their relationship; do they love each other? Or simply that they can see themselves in the other person? The play looks at sight vs. perception and how the people around us change the way in which we see the world.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

RE: We’ve staged an optical illusion, so I hope they talk about that. I also hope that the play provokes conversation on how New Yorkers see and connect with others and New York City.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

RE: Theme. There’s a love story that keeps the play moving, but it’s about sight and perception.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

RE: We’ve had a big response about the idea. We’ve heard a lot of “that’s the best title ever” kind of remarks.

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

RE: The optical part of the show would probably grow. There’s so much potential when dealing with what an audience sees vs. does not see. I think the production would be enhanced with very specific lighting (and some moving lights) which is not possible in a festival setting.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

RE: I would want the optical illusion at the end to fill the entire theatre, not just the stage. There would be something awesome about transforming the theatre into something new and then seeing the end of the play in this new world.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

RE: I think people will have different opinions/experiences about the connection we draw between visual acuity and romantic attraction.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

RE: “Love is blind, but love is not deaf.”

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

RE: Yes. There are fantastical moments throughout, but it is set in NYC present day.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

RE: Dr. Zizmor. He’s a stop on our main character’s first date and it would be surprising if he actually came to see the play!

Answers by Celestial Zenith
(writer/producer/actor)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

CZ: It’s about a past “me”, in a sense dramatized comedically, experiencing some very heightened moments in life and dancing them out, yelling them out, just getting them out a bit. Reading all of that now put it in the context of a speed dating event, your outcome is absurd circumstances with honest and genuine emotion. Well, I think that’s pretty raw and real.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

CZ: The first entrance and monologue, the movement found to interpret one of the core themes of the show is rather breathtaking and that first monologue to me is insanely serious and real and yet completely and utterly hilarious.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

CZ: I had to ponder this one. Theme, it’s definitely theme.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

CZ: Shannon, the director, said simply “This line is extremely powerful” (“my heart screamed at me when I agreed to this”) and as a writer that made me extremely proud.

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

CZ: I adore simplicity and staying true to merely having actor and story onstage. I think we may be able to embellish a little more in some of the moments we have incorporated movement and set the stage up as if it were an actual speed dating event rather then just one table and chair. But having the solitary one woman on stage, that wouldn’t change.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

CZ: Oh jeez, after all this talk of simplicity. I would spend money on the lighting, we have a few transitional moments where we are no longer in the speed dating world and it would be wonderful to use lighting in a way to help define those moments and enhance them.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

CZ: There are a few moments that the words could be considered very dramatic but the delivery is either sarcastic, hilarious, or just delivered in a way you would not expect. People might get it or they might get it later who knows – it’ll be cool to hear peoples response and reactions though.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

CZ: “And you know what? You know what? I am such a powerful woman, SUCH a powerful woman and yet I still crumble. – like a cookie on a dry day – CRUMBLE. Because of a past? Well, let me tell you. I got nothing”

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

CZ: Definitely sustainable. I think it’s an extreme but an extreme we have all lived in, I could see this happening right now today and I hope it does because it’s so raw and full of truth and honesty with the hilarity not being lost. It’s real life and that’s beautiful.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

CZ: Oh well. Alright you’re going to go there huh? My since childhood friend Hallie, because she is beautiful – supportive – amazing – and lives half way across the world on Maui, I’d be shocked to see her beautiful face smiling back at me from the audience that I would probably cry.

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

CB: I tell them that Karim and I play all the characters. I also say it’s funny and strange and sad and really good, so they should just come and see it!

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

CB: The end, but not too loudly.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

CB: Character.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

CB: Someone said it was a master class in DIY theatre. I though that was cool.

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

CB: We’d have real light cues and maybe live music, but the simplicity of the show is sort of what makes it so good.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

CB: Bowler hats and scarves for everyone in the audience!

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

CB: I play a dog. Sometimes we can’t continue for a solid minute while the crowd calms down. Other times it’s just polite laughter.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

CB: “There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before; like the larks in this country, that have been singing the same five notes over for thousands of years.” Willa Cather wrote this one.

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

CB: It’s a very human and relatable story, so yes.

Answers by Dan Bernitt
(writer/performer)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

DB:

Friend: You’ve got this show coming up. Sounds interesting.
Dan: Yeah, so, remember when I used to be a vegan, and how I was really insufferable about it–
Friend: None of us can forget.
Dan: And I used to listen to all those podcasts and watch those videos and do yoga in my East Village apartment in my tiny 55-square-foot bedroom
Friend: Oh my god, I know, that bedroom was awful! I don’t know how you fit so much in there.
Dan: IKEA + InDesign. You can design the best rooms that way.
Friend: Okay, so your show is about IKEA?
Dan: NO. Back on topic. So, I totally lost it. I lost my shit.
Friend: Yeah. You really did. You were batshit.
Dan: Well, we all know that guy was annoying. But – I learned to make fun of him.
Friend: So you make fun of yourself?
Dan: Yes. And maybe you’ll understand why I went so damn crazy.
Friend: Didn’t you meet some infomercial health guru while you were out in the desert, too?
Dan: Yes.
Friend: What was her name? She was, like, uber-famous.
Dan: Oh God, just come see the show already, everything will be explained. And then we’ll laugh and drink after.

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

DB: “So, we know Dan’s making fun of what he used to think, but isn’t some of that stuff true? Like peak oil, global warming, monocultures… Get me another Jameson.”
3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

DB: Character rushing down the rabbit hole of the theme.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

DB: In Minneapolis a man stopped me on the street. “I went to the wrong venue, and as soon as I sat down, I realized I was at the wrong show, but I thought, ‘whatever, Fringe shows are only an hour, I can do this.’ I can’t tell you how happy I am I made that mistake. I’m so glad I got to see your show.”

In a coffee shop in the same city, a mother told me, “My daughter and I both saw your show last night. We loved it. My daughter said the only thing better than seeing your show was the episode of ‘Doctor Who’ she watched later.”

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

DB: That kind of money would make me do crazy things that would probably kill the production.

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

DB: An escalator like the one in the Union Square Whole Foods. It has to be on stage. I take back my answer to the previous question. I’d put a goddamn escalator on the stage.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

DB: It really depends on how much people like roasted Brussels sprouts. Some audiences have salivated. One woman grunted from the back row. One guy pretended to write down the recipe (I was so tickled by him I told him I loved him). But that short moment about Brussels sprouts is followed closely by what’s turned into the most iconic line in the show that will make any literate person lose their shit laughing.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

DB: I can’t tell! It has everything to do with Greek tragedy. But that’s the line that gets an enormous laugh. I’m particularly fond of one line that only one person’s commented on: “Ankles go places like they got secrets to tell me.” (Boom!)

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

DB: Absolutely. Walk into any health food store or farmer’s market or gym and boom: here’s the inner monologue of a decent portion of the people you see — merged into one absurd rendition of it. I’m still conflicted on whether or not I want this world.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

DB: OMG, IT’S SHEILA E! COME UP ON STAGE, LET’S SING THIS SONG TOGETHER!

Answers by Alycya Miller (Writer, Director)

1. Your tag line is out there on postcards and press releases so we know the PR version of what this play is about. But when you talk to your family and friends, how do you explain the show to them?

AM: I say “If Ab Fab‘s Edina and Patsy met Abbott and Costello at a party and decided to have an orgy, Brownie and Lolli would be the combined offspring who appeared 9 months later.”

2. Here’s a scenario: After the show some audience members go have a drink. What’s the part of the show you hope they’re discussing?

AM: I hope they’re discussing underlying political and social satire.

3. What drives your show – character, theme or plot?

AM: Character.

4. In rehearsals, read-thrus, or prior incarnations, what’s the one thing someone said about the show so far that made you (or the team) the most proud?

AM: They said “I’ve never seen comedy show integrate choreographed dance numbers and good music like yours.”

5. Let’s fantasize for a moment. Let’s take the “off-off” off. Imagine this show is on Broadway. Would that change the production itself?

AM: It would probably water it down, put it in a blender with ice, and then suck the life out of it through a straw!

6. Taking that one step further – after paying everyone what they’re worth of course, what is the most lavish, luxurious, pointless thing you would spend money on if there was no constraints?

AM: A portable stripper pole.

7. Is there a scene, a moment, a gesture … anything at all in the show that you anticipate may get a completely different reaction depending on the audience that night?

AM: We took it out to meet Frigid”s 60 minute time slot, but yes, we have an abortion joke that depends on who is in the audience. We can’t wait for our Washington, DC performance where we can try it out again.

8. What’s your favorite line from the show?

AM: “Guess who got the wishbone.”

9. Is the world of this play sustainable outside a theatre? In other words … do you think people live the way the characters do? Would you want a world where they do?

AM: This is absurd, surreal comedy…people totally live this way outside theatre.

10. You scan the audience and you see a face that stops you dead in your tracks – who is it? And why are you shocked?

AM: Tyler Perry. Because I didn’t think he liked good theater.
