Canadian import Rachelle Elie enjoys being a woman. She especially enjoys her run-of-the-mill feminine pastimes: trying on sparkly dresses with eye makeup to match, dancing seductively to Ke$ha on a fur carpet, and hydrating with imported bottled water. She’s married to an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, has two lovely sons, and is, for all intents and purposes, living the dream.

Served with a side of audience discomfort, Elie’s solo show, Big Girls Don’t Cry (playing at The Red Room), is an insightful, if slightly off-putting insight into the psyche of the Modern Woman. Elie appears in what looks like a doll’s dress that lost a fight with a Bedazzler, knee-highs and platform slippers. She gapes and gasps her way through her basic biography, stopping every so often to sing or dance in a non-sequitur celebration of her womanhood. Questions are posed to the audience, and as she stares hard into each person’s eyes, she dares us to not be jealous of her in all her sparkle, and the beautiful life she has.

Rachelle Elie in Big Girls Don't Cry (photo by David Leyes)

But Elie’s not bragging. She’s smarter than that. The comedienne, with a strong background in dance, drama, and clowning, is actually a social commentator. And though her thesis statement isn’t shared until well into the piece (followed, of course, by an in-your-face gangster rap), we are fortunate enough to watch her slowly unravel her vacant Stepford persona throughout. The moments where things come apart–noted easily by the rugged octave drop in Elie’s voice–are the most vibrant, the most alive.

This is performance art. Interactive and thought-provoking, Elie will get in audience member’s faces, crack jokes at their expense, and bring them into her wacked-out world. But it’s a world we are only too fortunate enough to be in. Elie’s message stems from her time working in Kenya, the founder of an artists’ collective. She slowly works these Kenyan women into her story, and they become the pin that finally pops the bubble. These are women that don’t get to worry about lip-gloss or Ke$ha. And while not beating us over the head with the message, Elie reminds us of our good fortune; how lucky we are to be big girls in the here and now.

Answers by Rachelle Elie

(Writer / Performer)

Karen Tortora-Lee’s Question
That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?
Rachelle: INTRO… I had just returned from Kenya and found the experience left me feeling overwhelmed with tears of joy and sadness. When girls grow up, have kids, and get married, and pursue a satisfying carreer…or not get married, not have kids but pursue a career, we’re expected to get our emotions together and we’re not supposed to cry. The reality is that we do cry and we want to cry. We also live in a society where people shut themselves off from their emotions and my job is to delve deeply into feelings and share them with the world.

Diánna Martin’s Question
If you were going to invite five people, anyone from past and present, to see your FRIGID show – who would you invite and why?
Rachelle: My father, who passed away two years ago. He was an inspiration and hugely supportive of my work.
Lady Gaga, an original and a huge risk-taker.
Sam Kinison. I love his comedy and the quote I always have in my head is “get your f*** personality in line!”
My husband, a doctor who’s putting his job on hold, taking care of our kids for ten days while I’m following my dream.
Picasso, another risk-taker, prolific, and my favorite artist.

Antonio Minino’s Question
What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve ever made for your Art and was it worth it?
Rachelle: Every time I leave my family it’s a big sacrifice. My art was my first child though so the moments doing my work are precious and rewarding.

Geoffrey Paddy Johnson’s Question
Was there any unexpected discovery made during the development of this production and, if so, can you share it?
Rachelle: I have been exploring my heritage in this show, analyzing and dissecting that part of my personality. My dual American-Haitian heritage has shaped who I am and influenced choices throughout my life, and in developing this piece I have (re?) discovered that aspect.

Michelle Augello-Page’s Question
What do you hope the audience receives from the experience of seeing this show?
Rachelle: I hope they leave with a new awareness of what you see is not necessarily what you get, and that nature and nurture play strong, dual roles. I play with what lies beneath my own stereotype.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH

THM Bonus Question – We’re serious this year!
In the THM virtual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of DEAAAAATH which FRIGID Show do you take on? And what do you throw?

   Rachelle:

I take on Little Lady and send her PAPER.

Now that’s quite a pairing – Little Lady and Big Girl! Why, it’s almost fate! Unfortunately, it’s not in your favor, as Little Lady chose SCISSORS which cuts you up to Deaaaaath. But! You were also challenged by Love in the Time of Chlamydia and Intium/Finis. They both threw ROCK … which leaves you with two wins! No reason for this Big Girl to Cry … unless it’s tears of joy. Congratulations!

Why are so many people repulsed by (and fearful of) clowns? Could it be because the barbaric humor they deploy is played, in part, to mock the audience? Who, after all, but fools would be entertained by such crude gestures and antics? Or is it because those white, white faces, with broadly drawn features, are just plain scary? Rachelle Elie, in her one-woman show, Joe: The Perfect Man, at least spares us the white clown make-up, but everything else about her character’s grotesquely padded physique and appearance is from the classic costume rack: a hopelessly unconvincing grey, curly wig; wide-lens glasses; penciled-on goatee; black taped tooth gaps. Did I mention the loud plaid jacket and wide-striped pants? Yes, settle back folks, because this brand of entertainment will be, well, broad.

Elie’s clown is Joe Mal, a recently fired teacher closing on his sixties, who may or may not, depending on your sense of clownery, be suffering a nervous breakdown. Joe has turned up, in a soul-saving lather of enthusiasm, to audition for a part in a production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Only Joe – the crazy crackpot! – has notions on how he will improve the play by performing all the main parts and re-envisioning it as a rock ballet. With a happy ending. Jeez! Funny, no? And Joe (like any self-respecting clown) has a suitcase full of imaginative props to help the, er, drama, along. And, if that’s not enough, Joe instigates some audience participation (not once, but twice) in efforts to impress his unseen audition director, as he reinterprets monologues as “polylogues”, and directs the final scene as a balletic, joyful reunion of the villainous Lord and Lady Macbeth. Oh brother! Have we got a live one here, etc.

I, for one, was grateful when Joe’s concentration would slip and, forgetting momentarily what he was doing or where he was, he would go into free-fall in a disjointed, disturbing monologue of his own. Here was a real example of chaotic lunacy, not all that whack-em on the side of the head slapstick that was going on onstage. Clowning with a twist, and here, I thought, was the real genius of Elie’s invention – a performer terrified that the performance was drifting away from their control, that it was essentially discarding them leaving an abandoned creator whose own monster creation no longer had use for her.

Developed originally in a clown workshop in 2005, the character of Joe has taken hold of Rachelle Elie ever since. In collaboration with, and under the direction of Adam Lazarus, she has shopped him around to great acclaim for the past three years in his Macbeth auditioning role. In 2008 she won an Outstanding Comedy Award at the Ottawa Fringe Festival. Every performance, especially if you are relying on audience participants, is different of course. There were some genuinely disturbing, poignant, even funny moments in Joe, and there is no denying the performer’s courage, engagement and intelligence amidst the shenanigans. Elie can sing, dance, clown and collapse to the stage with aplomb. Bathos and pathos skate perilously close to each other here and that’s part of the thrill. But all the mayhem and silly-string in the world can fall short in an attempt to connect with people. If you begin with buffoonery and work up to travesty, perhaps you need to exercise a tighter control on the course of events and on audience attention. And audience sympathy. Because I could never believe in Joe, I was indifferent to his fate. I wouldn’t say the same of my attitude toward the undeniably talented Rachelle Elie.

Today’s Q&A is with Rachelle Elie who is the Writer and Performer of Joe: The Perfect Man

After losing his job, Joe’s passion to play all the lead roles in “The Scottish Play” explodes to the surface.
answers by Rachelle Elie – Writer and Performer

Antonio Asks: What makes FRIGID such a warm and welcoming experience for your production?

Just the fact that it’s in the booming metropolis of New York City makes it a warm welcoming experience. I am travelling from Toronto Canada and I jump at any opportunity to perform in The Big Apple. Also the staff so far have been super duper!

Diánna Asks: What about this play do you feel most drawn to personally, and because of that, what message do you hope the audience walks away with?

I feel most drawn to JOE the lead character in this this play. Getting to step in his shoes every night is such a great privilege. Being able to disappear into this lovable loser is a blast. That is what I hope people will go home with… feeling that they have watched an actress disappear into her role for 1 hour. Hopefully it will leave you dreaming about this wonderful character!!

Karen Asks: That’s some title. How did you come up with it – and what does it mean?

I personally find titles are often very difficult…We definitely knew JOE would probably be somewhere in the title because it’s really about JOE and the perfect man part came up because in improvs JOE always talked about being the perfect man for the job. The show is a Macbeth audition so because JOE felt he was “The perfect man” to play all the lead roles in Macbeth the title emerged from that line … I have at times wished I just called it JOE but there’s no going back … next title – JOE’s inferno!

Stephen Asks: You must have a favorite part of your show. What makes it your favorite?

I sing and dance to George Michael a la Macbeth I love doing that part. I still love George and I alwasy feel happy when i sing “last xmas…”. It’s very physical fun and ridiculous. I also love the Macbeth as a rock opera bit. I get to play with new people every night and there are always surprises. Lastly I love the fight between JOE and the cranky theatre director. I get to really lose my temper as JOE and that is super fun!

Lina Asks: How much of your show was inspired by true events?

When the show was being developed I created a JOE mask with Mike Kennard (Mump and Smoot). A lot of the show was created around mask explorations with Mike Kennard and improvisation I did with Adam Lazarus (quiptake). Much of what came out was new and from JOE’s back story. There are mini tidbits that come in and those are personal events I experienced growing up mostly in theatre school i.e: Joe says he played HYMEN in “As You Like It”. I actually played “Hymen” in theatre school and it was very traumatic so I was so happy to give that to Joe’s story and it seems to fit him well. I also had a teacher that said “you’re in a boat and it’s sinking. You can get out and swim or you can sink.” I gave JOE those lines as they seemed to suit him well.

THM Bonus Question: If you could play a virtual game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with another FRIGID Show which show would you take on? And what would you throw?

I would take on ONEymoon and I would throw scissors!!!

Thanks JOE: The Perfect Man – for participating in The Happiest Medium’s FRIGID New York Festival 2011 Q&A. And for playing our game! You’re officially SCISSORS. You took on ONEymoon who – quite coincidentally also challenged YOU. I sense a bit of collusion here! However, regardless – ONEymoon threw ROCK and smashed your SCISSORS to bits. Sorry, JOE:The Perfect Man, you’ve been bested. This is how it works in the crazy world of the VIRTUAL ROCK PAPER SCISSORS TOURNAMENT!
